Till date, the TV channels in India run under the acts which made it necessary for them to address user complaints. The OCCPs (Online Curated Content Providers) like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, etc. did not have any such rule.
With so many changes because of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, the new thing in place will be the Self-regulation code. This code will include a list of fifteen online platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5, ALTBalaji, Discovery+, Hungama, Voot, JioCinema, Eros Now, Shemaroo, Flickstree, MX Player, Arre, HoiChoi. As per the code, these online streaming providers will have to set up a tool for complaint redressal.
This new code got issued over the weekend. Though as of now we only have these 15 providers in the list, we may soon find others adding up.
As per the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), this code will not only enable the consumers to put across what they want but will also inspire creativity among the providers. Hence, making sure that the curators bring forward the best of the stories.
Under the new code, these online content providers will specifically mention a few aspects of the show to their audiences. It will include but not limited to age ratings, content descriptions, and parental controls.
In the past, we came across situations where streaming services like Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar had to withdraw the content that was cynical of the current government. And now with this code in place, the audiences will have a say in what they want to view. It could be beneficial in some respects, but in other, this could lead further to pro-government restriction.
The Streaming services will set up an internal committee, a Consumer complaint department along with an advisory panel. These set departments/committees will listen to the grievances of the consumers, to their appeals, escalations, and complaints. Apart from the internal members, there will be external advisors to be designated within the next 60 days.
Well, what it means as an audience is now, we have a say in what we prefer. It means that streaming services will pay more attention to making sure they get relevant and suitable information for us from across the world. At the same time, making sure they share our best to the world.
